Making Friends: Social Understanding for Students With Autism and Asperger's

Explore the stages of social coaching for children and teens with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Understand the social implications of students with Asperger’s or Autism and help these students develop the social skills they need in the classroom. This topic describes the social challenges that children with Asperger’s Syndrome or Autism Spectrum Disorder may encounter while in the classroom. As the speaker notes, play is work for a child with ASD and children with ASD typically do not become social butterflies; but they can forge friendships. Dr. Norall would like to give teachers the resources to help a child with Asperger’s Syndrome or ASD build lasting relationships in their school environments.
This material will introduce social coaching strategies that were found to be successful while developing the social skills group, Friends’ Club® in Carlsbad CA. The topic will describe two types of learners: the People Thinker and the Thing Thinker. We will explore stages of social coaching as well as what to do in a situation where the child needs social facilitation. The material will also include excerpts and examples of helpful tips from the book Quirky, Yes - Hopeless, No.
