James Vines is the Environmental, Health and Safety partner in the Atlanta office of King & Spalding, LLP, heading up the firm’s Health & Safety sub-group. Jim’s practice emphasizes all aspects of EH&S focusing on crisis management, environmental compliance, environmental management systems, domestic safety and health (OSHA) and international health and safety matters.
Jim conducts regular seminars and workshops on EHS risk management. He is a former United States Attorney. Jim was a Law Clerk, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, Supreme Court of the United States (OT 1989); Hon. Robert R. Merhige, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
He is a Bar member: Georgia, Tennessee, Washington, D.C.; U.S. Attorney General’s advisory sub-committees on environmental issues, counter-terrorism, and computer hacking and intellectual property crimes. Jim holds a J.D. degree, Washington and Lee University; B.S. degree, Washington and Lee University.

About Me

How many years of experience do you have in your field?
I have more than 25 years of experience in the EHS field and has handled matters in a broad variety of international jurisdictions including Europe, Canada, Latin America, MENA, Asia, Eurasia, and Australia. A significant portion of my recent domestic and international work has been managing privileged internal investigations and related agency negotiations following industrial accidents and workplace fatalities.
What is your area of expertise?
I head up the firm’s Health & Safety sub-group which advises and defends clients in federal and state plan OSHA matters as well as international health and safety matters. I frequently advises clients on compliance with OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM) standard and on other process safety issues beyond the reach of PSM. On the environmental side, I have counseled and represented clients in litigation related to most of the major federal environmental laws and many counterpart state laws. Over the course of his career, I have represented clients at over 400 federal CERCLA (“Superfund”), RCRA Corrective Action, and state counterpart environmental clean up sites.
