Benefits
The market for green roofs in North America has grown dramatically in the last 10 years. Green roofs, while still only a tiny fraction of the overall roofing and landscaping market have become increasingly important in the green building marketplace. As with many young markets there are common misconceptions, and like many other green building techniques there is a lot of hype surrounding the design and function of green roofs. This live audio conference will focus on understanding how the components and design of green roof systems contribute to form and function of the roof. We will examine realistic expectations for green roof performance and how to optimize roof assemblies, design and maintenance to optimize roof performance. We will discuss existing design guidelines and materials standards and materials testing protocols including fire resistance, wind uplift, root resistance, and media and drainage chemical and physical properties. By obtaining a better understanding of green roof design principles, you will be in a position to make better choices. You will leave this audio conference with an appreciation for the importance of adopting a systematic approach to design that includes setting appropriate goals, and selecting materials and assembly types that are most likely to meet your expectations.
Learning Objectives:
- You will be able to discuss and provide realistic quantification of the benefits of green roof systems.
- You will be able to identify green roof materials and systems and interpret standard test results.
- You will be able to explain how design, media, and climate influence plant selection, establishment and vegetation maintenance requirements.
- You will be able to review design, plant selection, and climate and determine the potential need for irrigation.
