Benefits

Child sexual abuse investigations are difficult on children because of the recall of abuse details that are sexual in nature. Each instance of retelling the sexual experience adds to the traumatization of the child. Members of the multidisciplinary team also rely on the videotaped interview for information necessary to completing the investigation to avoid repeated interviews. This live audio conference helps professionals involved in forensic interviewing or other aspects of child sexual abuse allegations to understand how a protocol has been used to best facilitate the interview process. Through research and practice evidence, recommendations are provided from an analysis of 90 videotapes of child sexual abuse interviews from a child advocacy center via a 69-item standardized instrument generated from prior studies. Eight evidence areas support advanced techniques in a four-stage interview process for diverse disclosure and nondisclosure cases.

Learning Objectives:

  • You will be able to review the research on child sexual abuse forensic interviews and findings.
  • You will be able to discuss recommendations for practice.
  • You will be able to explain the four stages of interview protocol.
